Rolex is one of the most famous brands in the world, a name that has become synonymous with luxury and without doubt the most famous Swiss watchmaker in the world today. With headquarters based in Geneva Switzerland, manufacturing based in Bienne Switzerland Rolex prides itself with its distribution in over 100 countries.
Founded by German watchmaker Hans Wilsdorf and his brother in law Alfred Davis in London, England in 1905 as Wilsdorf and Davis. Originally they imported movements from a Swiss manufacturer called Hermann Aegler and put them in high quality cases. The original watches had unbranded dials so the retailers who sold them could place their own name on the dial. In 1908 Wilsdorf registered the trade mark ROLEX and would later change the company name to Rolex.
In 1910 a Rolex watch was the first wristwatch in the world to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision and Rolex soon became synonymous with reliability and accuracy. Further innovations including the first waterproof watch, inventing the first self-winding watch using a rotor and the first automatic with date made them highly desirable.
Having always been a brand associated with sporting excellence – the credentials of these achievements began in 1927 when Mercedes Gleizte swam across the channel. Rolex today is a supporter and partner of top sporting and cultural events across the world.
